Herd Community 1.0.0 is here
We said it was coming, and here it is: the CapivaraOS server edition has left "soon" behind and landed. Herd Community 1.0.0 is available to download now — free and production-ready.
Herd is our capybara for servers: a Fedora 44 base, headless (no graphical desktop), with the same philosophy as the other spins — no bloat, focused on what matters, its own identity. Except here the stage is the terminal, and the audience is different: sysadmins, homelab enthusiasts, and anyone who prefers to control what runs on their own machine.
Hardened out of the box
A freshly installed server already ships with a sensible security profile, with nothing for you to configure: SELinux in enforcing mode, hardened SSH (keys only, no root, with login attempt limits), a restrictive firewall exposing only the essentials, and system auditing enabled. And to administer it from the browser whenever you like, the Cockpit console is built in.
Two images
Herd 1.0.0 ships as two x86_64 images: an installer ISO, to
install from scratch on a physical server or VM, and a qcow2 image
with cloud-init, to spin up quickly on cloud or virtualization.
Both come with a SHA-256 checksum — always verify the integrity of your download.
